tcs: TCS, Infosys, Wipro et al. had predicted a demand dip. They’re now hiring big to meet a surge.
Synopsis
Far from a post-pandemic demand crunch that IT companies had planned for, they are now facing the prospect of a supply shortfall. To overcome this, they have begun hiring, issuing pay rises and promotions, and bringing on sub-contractors to ensure they have enough people to deliver on deals.
When the pandemic started, Indian IT companies were worried about demand. If entire countries were shut down and people were stuck at their homes, would their clients hold back on their tech spending until things began to improve? Last April, when they announced their results, they outlined a number of steps they would take. They tightened up performance appraisals, froze hiring, withheld salary increases and promotions — anything to cut costs
